Why dark clouds do not tell the whole story
The cloud formation in the supplied image looks dramatic, but visual appearance alone cannot establish the severity, precise location, or future path of a storm. Dark clouds may indicate a thick cloud layer, substantial moisture, or limited sunlight passing through the atmosphere. They do not, by themselves, prove that a tornado, hurricane, or other particular disaster is imminent.

Meteorologists assess many factors when evaluating storms, including radar observations, atmospheric instability, wind patterns, rainfall rates, and the storm’s movement. A photograph offers only a single moment from one viewing angle.

This distinction matters because viral weather images can be shared without their original dates or locations. A photograph of a storm from one country may be reposted as if it were an imminent threat somewhere else. An old image can also circulate during a new weather event, creating confusion about what is happening now.

People should therefore check local forecasts and official warnings rather than making decisions based solely on a photograph, social media caption, or dramatic headline. If an official alert identifies a nearby severe thunderstorm or flash-flood threat, however, it should be taken seriously even if the sky outside does not yet look especially threatening.

What to do when heavy rain begins
If a severe thunderstorm is approaching, move indoors and keep away from windows. Bring pets inside if it is safe to do so, and avoid standing beneath trees or near unstable outdoor structures. If a flood warning is issued, move away from streams, drainage channels, and low-lying areas.

Do not walk or drive through floodwater. A shallow-looking section of water can conceal a deep hole or a powerful current. If water begins entering a building, move toward higher ground when it is safe and follow emergency instructions. Do not enter a basement or underground garage that is filling with water.
