Driving deserves particular caution. High-profile vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles towing trailers can be difficult to control in powerful crosswinds. Falling branches, flying debris, reduced visibility, and flooded roads add further risks. If authorities advise people to remain off the roads, that instruction should be taken seriously.
The most important principle is simple: do not wait for visible destruction before treating a wind warning as a serious threat. By the time debris begins flying, the safest opportunity to prepare may already have passed.

2. Severe Thunderstorms and Torrential Rain: A Dangerous Combination
The second major threat illustrated by the screenshot is the dark storm system hanging over a city. Beneath an impressive cloud formation, rain can fall in intense curtains, visibility can deteriorate quickly, and lightning may strike far from the area experiencing the heaviest rainfall.
Severe thunderstorms are not simply ordinary rain showers with louder thunder. Depending on the atmosphere and local geography, they can bring damaging wind gusts, hail, frequent lightning, sudden flooding, and—in some circumstances—tornadoes. The most dangerous conditions may develop quickly, leaving little time for people who have not been paying attention to forecasts and alerts.
One of the most serious hazards is torrential rainfall. When rain falls faster than the ground, drainage systems, rivers, or streams can accommodate, water begins to accumulate. Streets may flood, underpasses can fill, and small streams can rise rapidly. Even locations that rarely experience flooding can become dangerous when rainfall is unusually intense.
