Urgent 3! Extremely powerful storm just swept through B… See more

Do not try to outrun a tornado on foot or stop to film it. The direction and speed of a tornado can be difficult to judge, and roads may be blocked by traffic, debris, or floodwater. The safest choice is to act on official warnings before the storm reaches the immediate area.

Tropical cyclones and typhoons
The screenshot’s palm trees and threatening coastal weather could also remind readers of tropical cyclones. These systems can affect vast areas and may bring several hazards at once.

A tropical cyclone is not dangerous only because of its strongest winds. Heavy rainfall can cause inland flooding far from the coastline, while storm surge can raise coastal water levels. Large waves and dangerous surf may damage beaches, ports, and coastal infrastructure. Landslides can occur where intense rain saturates steep terrain.

The strongest winds are not necessarily found across the entire storm. Conditions can vary considerably depending on the cyclone’s structure, its movement, and the surrounding environment. A location outside the center may still experience life-threatening rain or coastal flooding.

Storm surge deserves particular attention. It occurs when storm-related forces raise sea levels above the normal astronomical tide. Its impact depends on factors such as the storm’s intensity, size, direction of approach, coastal shape, water depth, and the timing of the tide.

People sometimes underestimate a cyclone because their homes are not directly in the projected path of the center. However, forecast tracks have uncertainty, and hazards can extend well beyond the center. Residents should follow the full set of local warnings rather than relying on a single line drawn on a map.

Why dramatic cloud formations can be misleading
Clouds can appear to rotate, spread outward, or descend dramatically because of the storm’s structure, wind patterns, and the angle from which the scene is photographed. Wide-angle lenses, contrast enhancement, and image editing can further exaggerate the appearance of scale.

That does not mean a dramatic image should be ignored. It means the image must be interpreted carefully. It may illustrate a genuine atmospheric event, but it cannot reliably establish whether the viewer’s own location is under threat.

A photograph also cannot tell a reader whether the storm is moving toward them, away from them, or remaining stationary. A weather system’s direction and speed require additional information. Nor can a still image establish whether an official warning is currently in effect.

When the sky looks unusual, check a trusted weather service, local meteorological agency, or emergency management authority. If a warning is issued, follow the specified instructions immediately. If no warning is available, avoid unnecessary exposure while seeking reliable information.

The practical lesson is not to fear every unusual cloud. It is to recognize that weather hazards are best evaluated through evidence, observation, and official warnings—not through appearance alone.
