Finding maggots in a household trash bin can be unpleasant, particularly during warm weather. Maggots are fly larvae, and they can develop when flies find food waste or other organic material where they can lay their eggs.

Why Do Maggots Appear in Trash Cans?
Flies are attracted to organic waste, including leftover food, meat, fruit, and other materials that begin to decompose. When suitable conditions are present, flies may lay eggs on or near the waste.
Warm and humid conditions can speed up the process. A closed trash bin containing food waste can therefore provide a suitable environment for fly larvae to develop.
If you notice maggots in your trash bin, start by removing the affected garbage.
Secure the garbage bag. Tie it tightly and place it in the appropriate outdoor waste container.
Keep children and pets away. Restrict access to the area while you remove the waste and clean the bin.
Empty the trash can completely. Check the bottom and sides for any remaining food or organic material.
Wash the bin thoroughly. Use hot water and household detergent to clean the interior, lid, and other areas where residue may have collected.
Rinse and dry the container. Allow the bin to dry completely before putting in a new garbage bag.
