King Charles and Queen Camilla have weathered decades of scandal, separation, and public scrutiny to build one of the royal family’s most enduring marriages. But according to insiders, part of what keeps it working happens after the lights go out.
As the Daily Mail reported, Charles and Camilla don’t share a bed — or even a bedroom — at their London residence, Clarence House.
“[His Royal Highness] has a room with a double bed, decorated to his own taste, then Camilla has her own room with a double bed, decorated just the way she likes it,” a Daily Mail source explained. “In addition, they have a shared bedroom with a double bed that they can use whenever they like. The arrangement suits them perfectly.”
According to the Mirror, the setup may partly be linked to the king’s long-standing back problems, making it easier for him to rest well on his own. Royal expert Joshua Rom has also pointed to their packed, high-pressure schedules as a reason both prefer some space to recharge.
It’s far from unusual among British royalty. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip reportedly slept in separate quarters for most of their 73-year marriage, and William and Kate are said to follow a similar arrangement at times.
“In England, the upper class always have had separate bedrooms. You don’t want to be bothered with snoring or someone flinging a leg around,” Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, Lady Pamela Hicks, once said.
