Funk won the National Wrestling Alliance world heavyweight championship in 1969 and held the title for more than four years, one of the longest uninterrupted reigns in the championship’s history. Dory and Terry Funk became the only brothers to each win the NWA world heavyweight title.
The brothers were inducted together into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. Dory Funk Jr. also was inducted into the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame and was a member of WT’s Hall of Champions.
Beyond his work in the ring, Funk became a respected trainer. Through his Funking Conservatory wrestling school in Florida, he helped train or mentor wrestlers including Kurt Angle, Edge, Christian, Jeff and Matt Hardy, Mark Henry and Mickie James.
