Evelyn walked in wearing cream trousers, low heels, and the same composed smile she always had when she expected everyone to fall in line. A lawyer trailed behind her, holding a leather folder under his arm. The moment Evelyn spotted Detective Chen standing near the computer, her expression slipped for a second before she turned to Tyler.
“You were supposed to erase that camera.”
Her attorney grabbed her arm at once.
“Evelyn… don’t say another word.”
It was already too late.
Detective Chen moved between Evelyn and the doorway.
“Mrs. Langford, place your purse on the desk and keep your hands where I can see them.”
Evelyn gave a short laugh.
“This is ridiculous. My daughter-in-law had an episode. We were only trying to protect the baby.” Babies& Toddlers
“By locking both of them inside a vehicle?”
“That isn’t what happened.”
“We just watched it happen.”
Her attorney cut in quickly.
“A private recording can be manipulated. Until its authenticity is verified, my client won’t be answering any questions.”
Ignoring him, Evelyn calmly set the leather folder on my late husband’s desk.
Inside was an emergency custody petition.
The document painted Rachel as emotionally unstable, delusional, careless, and unfit to raise her newborn. It asked the court to grant Evelyn temporary custody of Lily, claiming Tyler traveled too much for work.
The petition had been drawn up two days earlier.
It had been signed that very morning.

“You planned this.”
Evelyn looked at me with rehearsed sympathy.
“I planned to protect my granddaughter from a woman who clearly isn’t capable of caring for her.”
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was the hospital.
The nurse asked if I was somewhere private, so I put the call on speaker with Detective Chen beside me.
“Rachel’s toxicology results are back,” the nurse said. “We found a prescription sedative in her bloodstream. The dose wasn’t enough to knock her out right away, but it would seriously impair her coordination and judgment. Combined with prolonged heat exposure, it could easily have turned fatal.”
My eyes went straight to the empty electrolyte bottle frozen on the paused footage.
