My 17-year-old son shaved off all his hair for his girlfriend battling c.a.n.c.e.r — the next day, her mother called and said, “You need to come to the h.o.s.p.i.t.a.l and see what your son did.”
My son, Aaron, has always had a kind heart.
He’s seventeen, does well in school, stays out of trouble, and notices when someone around him is struggling.
He began dating Lily, the daughter of one of my closest friends.
I was happy for them. They were wonderful together, and it was obvious how deeply they cared for each other.
Then, a few months ago, Lily was diagnosed with c.a.n.c.e.r.
One moment, they were discussing college and planning weekend dates. The next, Lily’s life revolved around h.o.s.p.i.t.a.l.s, treatments, and test results.
Aaron was devastated.
I could see how helpless he felt watching someone he loved struggle through something he couldn’t take away.
But he never left her side.
He visited whenever possible, brought her favorite snacks, helped with schoolwork, and sat beside her for hours.
