The 65-year-old is already serving 2 life sentences for kidnapping and assaulting another 17-year-old Pasco County student the year before Odom’s death. According to the state, the cases are too similar for Crum not to be convicted of Odom’s murder.
The defense team argues there was not enough evidence for jurors to deliver a guilty verdict.
“Just because somebody is convicted of one crime does not mean they are guilty of another crime, and that’s basically what they’re asking you to do,” described Crum’s attorney, “reasonable doubt comes from several places, and one of those is lack of evidence, that’s what I want you to focus on.”
Crum’s attorney Jenna Finkelstein, claimed DNA evidence found in the case could rule out Crum as the suspect, “That DNA sample on those defensive areas on her left hand. The only DNA that we have is not his. It excludes him.”
