A nationwide recall has been issued in the United States after glass fibers were discovered in certain injectable medications used to treat joint problems in dogs and horses. The recall affects select lots of Adequan Canine Injection and Adequan i.m. Injection, both manufactured by American Regent Animal Health.
Why the Products Were Recalled
The company said glass fibers were detected during routine testing of retained samples. If injected, these particles could cause:
- Pain at the injection site
- Swelling and inflammation
- Infection
- Abscesses
- Local tissue irritation
As of the recall announcement, no injuries or adverse events had been reported.
Products Included in the Recall
The recall covers four lots:
Adequan Canine Injection (dogs)
- Lot 3369
- Lot 25011
Adequan i.m. Injection (horses)
- Lot 24416
- Lot 25265P
The affected products were distributed nationwide to veterinarians, wholesalers, distributors, and online pharmacies between May 2024 and January 2026.
What Pet Owners Should Do
If your dog or horse received one of the recalled lots:
- Stop using the affected medication immediately.
- Contact your veterinarian if your pet develops swelling, pain, or other unusual symptoms after an injection.
- Return or dispose of the recalled product according to your veterinarian’s or the manufacturer’s instructions.
Veterinary clinics and distributors have also been instructed to stop using and distributing the recalled lots.
Company Statement
American Regent said it initiated the recall as a precaution to protect animal health and is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has published the recall notice and advises anyone with the affected products not to use them.
