Yolanda Saldívar’s Family Says Selena’s Confrontation Contributed to Her Death
Nearly three decades after the murder of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla, new comments from Yolanda Saldívar’s family have reignited controversy surrounding the events that led to the singer’s death.
Saldívar, who has been serving a life sentence for Selena’s 1995 murder, has long maintained that she did not intentionally kill the singer. According to a March 2025 report by the New York Post, Saldívar’s family now says she believes Selena’s aggressive confrontation contributed to the deadly encounter.
“Yolanda knows what she did was wrong and she takes responsibility for it,” a family member told the Post. The relative nevertheless claimed that Saldívar was reacting to the way Selena confronted her.
“She says that [Selena] came at her really aggressively,” the family member said. “She was so thrown off with how forceful Selena was being; everything happened so fast.”
The family member went further, saying that the tragedy might have been avoided if Selena had confronted Saldívar differently.
“If Selena had confronted her differently, this never would have happened,” the relative said.
