A family vacation in New York turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in April 2025 when a sightseeing helicopter carrying a Spanish family crashed into the Hudson River.
The family had traveled to New York to spend time together and celebrate one of their children’s birthday. Among the final photographs from their trip was an image showing the young girl smiling inside the helicopter before the flight began.
The photograph later became a poignant reminder of how quickly an ordinary family outing can change.
A Special Family Trip
Agustín Escobar, a Siemens executive, was in the United States for work when his wife, Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children joined him.
The family was from Barcelona, Spain.
They had planned to enjoy New York together and celebrate one of the children’s birthdays during the trip. The child was turning nine the following day.
For the family, the helicopter ride was supposed to be one of the memorable experiences of their visit.
They boarded a sightseeing helicopter operated by New York Helicopters and prepared to see New York’s famous skyline from above.
The Photograph
Photographs taken shortly before the flight showed the family smiling as they prepared to board.
Another image showed the young girl sitting inside the helicopter cockpit area beside the pilot.
She appeared excited about the experience.
At the time, nobody could have known that the photograph would later become one of the final images connected to the family’s trip.
The flight departed from a Manhattan heliport during the afternoon of April 10, 2025.
The Flight Over New York
The helicopter flew along the Manhattan skyline before continuing north toward the George Washington Bridge.
The sightseeing flight lasted only around 18 minutes.
According to investigators, the helicopter later turned south. It eventually crashed into the Hudson River near Jersey City, New Jersey.
All six people aboard died: the parents, their three children, and the pilot.
The children were young, making the tragedy especially difficult for their relatives and the communities that knew the family.
A Family Remembered
After the accident, relatives and officials remembered the family as close and deeply loved.
At a memorial ceremony, a relative spoke about the importance of remembering the family through their happiness and the smiles they shared.
The family had begun what was supposed to be a joyful birthday celebration.
Instead, their trip became a devastating loss.
